the awards season has officially begun with 2009 Emmy awards presented last night, and while we could talk about how great Neil Patrick Harris was, how funny Ricky Gervais was and how exciting it was that Cherry Jones and Mad Men won, we know what I really care about: the red carpet.
Drew Barrymore in Monique Lluhllier one of my favorite looks of the evening, classic Hollywood glamour. She was THIS close to having a wardrobe malfunction and i wish the color didn't wash her out but the details on the skirt: beautiful. I'm sure all the prom designers are rushing knock-offs into stores for the Spring.
Blake Lively in Versace - not a gown made for a female audience. I would have liked it more without the sequins and the cutouts plus messy braid was a little too Barbarella for me.
Kristen Chenoweth in Zuhair Murad - sunglasses anyone? The shape was good if a bit informal for the Emmys but the sparkly stuff(not sure what) was too much.
Jon Cryer in Moschino - A horizontal striped sweater vest is not appropriate for the Emmys. .
Mariska Hargitay in Carolina Herrera - thats how you do silver Kristen....
Chloe Sevigny in Isaac Mizrahi - Its hard to pull off black and white polka dots with yellow accents but somehow it worked for me. Although she's known for being fashion forward , she did an off the shoulder look along with everyone else.
Tina Fey in Gucci -I thought this dress was boring until she she turned around - then it was whole other story.
Hayden Panetierre in J. Mendel - Hayden, you're 20 why are you trying to look 50? You'll get there soon enough.
January Jones in Versace - I heard this gown in person was beautiful but the breastplate peplum combo was over the top for me. She needs to meet Michael Kors.
Rose Byrne in Valentino - again a throwback to old Hollywood, the gown was stunning i wished her hair and makeup matched the look of the dress and she was swimming in it.
Jennifer Morrison in Calvin Klein - I loved this dress. Very architectural without being overdone or scream avant garde. And its hard to pull off an asymmetrical hemline this worked.
Olivia Wilde in Marchesa - This gown is supposed to be 'couture' it looked Bob Mackie circa 1974(and not in a good way) to me.
Kate Walsh in J. Mendel - two words: back fat.
Julia Louis Dreyfus in Vera Wang - this is the first time i've liked one of her gowns, it was age appropriate yet 'pretty'...
Patricia Arquette in (who cares) - while she she does have the best accessory on the carpet she never gets it right. Its as if she ripped off the right sleeve on a mother of the bride gown from the 70s thats two sizes too small.
Jon Hamm in Gucci - nuff said....
Go to www.style.com to see what I'm talking about. See you after the Golden Globes.
Now i like Neil in small doses but a full on concert? on CBS? A rerun of the Mentalist would be far more appealing or even the pilots that you paid for but didn't pick up!
Sigh...where are my sleeping pills?
so...
People who say its not hot and humid in LA DON'T LIVE HERE!
Saw great theatre in NYC over the holiday weekend. Audra McDonald was a comedy revelation and I nearly plotzed when I saw 3 large Robert Longo paintings in the great hall of the Met.
Moved. Again. Hoping this one sticks
Osteria Mozza - i highly recommend the orchiette and the melon sorbetto
Saw 500 days of summer and Julie & Julia. Adults DO go to the movies. Its worth the admission just to see Meryl Streep chop onions.
Wolverine - Meh.
Star Trek - very enjoyable except too much Nimoy not nearly enough Simon Pegg and Karl Urban.
The version of 'Rehab' on Glee was the best 3 and half minutes of television in ages. Can't say the same for the rest of the show.
Been stalking the Kogi Korean BBQ truck.
I don't even watch AI but saw the finale: Adam was robbed, Rod Stewart had more work done and Steve Martin? Really?
Black Moth Super Rainbow: good song, not so good name.
Saw Kenneth Branagh in Brentwood.
Angels and Demons was a bit better than DaVinci code and apparently the traffic in Rome is horrendous.
Had a Harrison Ford/Calista Flockhart sighting - even in horizontal stripes, she's teeny.
I FINALLY got a car. I've only lived in LA for what? 7 months?
....mmmmm polenta! I must grab dinner before i post the Met Gala dress parade roundup and boy there are some doozies!
It was great meeting all y'all - hope you had fun on Sunday and everyone had a safe flight home!

With questions from
1) fashion - favorite clothing, shoe and/or accessory designer (and why) Well even with some big missteps in my opinion by Lagerfeld Chanel will always be my number one. I can't help it. I would hate to be cliche and say that love Louboutins and Manolo Blahnik but I do, especially Blahnik who designs a beautiful shoe. Everyone and I mean everyone looks good in at least one of his styles. He understands the line of the leg and makes the shoe an extension of it. Whether or not you can run around in heels is an entirely different matter. I'm also loving the new Liz Claiborne line by Mizrahi.
2) fashion - same again, but this time least favorite clothing, shoe and/or accessory designer (and why) My least favorite designer at the moment is Roberto Cavalli - his outfits tend to be so over the top that they read tacky instead of glamourous. There's only so much animal print one can do and he always has people in it head to toe.
3) California vs. New York: the people, the lifestyle, the pros and cons
in a perfect world, I would be bi-coastal. There's a big difference between California as a whole and Los Angeles where i'm now based. LA can be great, the weather is nice, ALWAYS nice it does get too hot in the summer but so does NY(and contrary to popular belief LA is getting humid too) and the pace is slower and its less expensive but its a cultural wasteland which NY has in spades and l love the people watching while getting from A to B in NY. There's also an energy there that I miss. That said after spending 18 months taking the F train - being in my own little bubble is so much nicer - for now. If i had to add freeway driving to my commute it would get tired AWFULLY fast.
4) Travel: where have you been that you loved, where do you very much want to go next
I love traveling i just don't love the 'act' of traveling -I'm still a jittery flyer after all these years but i do it. Places that i've loved are London(no explanation needed), Venice(its like being in a painting - though its been a while but i found it ASTOUNDING) and Verona, I was there for 24 hours but covered a lot of ground ,saw some amazing art - including a photography show by Man Ray that was housed in Juliet's house and a Miro exhibit in a cavern - topped off by an evening of opera in an ancient open air stadium. I also enjoyed Edinburgh. Next on my list is Dublin(i know, i know its ridiculous that I haven't been yet) Vienna and Austin Texas for either SXSW or the ACL festival. I'd also love to see the Guggenheim in Bilbao and get to India and Hong Kong at some point. I will be going to Alaska to see the Glaciers very soon before they disappear.
5) TV - cultural wasteland or a medium with much to offer in the future? Here's a big secret - most people who work in tv DON'T WATCH tv. Bottom line is they don't have time. And if they do its usually the opposite kind of programming that they work on. For instance a friend of mine works at a reality tv channel and when he gets home its sports or movies and scripted series on HBO. I think TV needs to change drastically to keep up with the audiences interest but there is so many channels out there now especially that fill niches there should be something for everyone. The debate has been raging since TV landed in almost everyone's household that the networks always try to appeal to the lowest common denominator but you'd be surprised how many desired upscale viewers watch 'trainwreck' television.
It drove me crazy when I saw this dress on Miley Cyrus on Sunday:
because, from the waist down it reminded me of this gown I saw when I was a kid at the Met Costume Institute:
Except Zuhiar Murad decided to 'improve' Miley's dress with the beaded top and shell belt.
I'll take the Dior. And you?
This year's broadcast was much better than in recent years but as much as I enjoy Hugh Jackman, one production number would have sufficed, and I'll scream if i see one more story on the entertainment news shows about how Brangelina were in the same venue(with 5 thousand of their closest friends) and shared an onscreen glance while Jennifer Aniston was on stage - its been YEARS people! Let it go!
But I'm here to talk about the gowns:
Kate Winslet in YSL - I'm not quite loving this one shoulder look its a beautiful color and the hair and makeup are perfect.
SJP in Dior Haute Couture - The ballgown is back! Its a shape she always wears so its getting tired at this point - at least its not pink(she called it barely mint) and the belt is a little too Dress Barn that doesn't really work with such a formal look.
Marisa Tomei in Versace. Pleats Please! This gown looked alternately beautiful and overdone depending on the photograph but its an improvement over her SAG and Golden Globe choices.
Viola Davis in Reem Acra(?!?) This is just too Saturday Night Fever for me but surprisingly the gold lame doesn't overpower her.
Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive. I liked this gown and its the best she's worn on the red carpet but I couldn't help thinking that all those pailattes cracked when she sat down. I thought the gold tulle dress she wore during the show was prettier and she could sing and dance in it.
Natalie Portman in Rodarte. This gown is on everyone's best dressed list but I think she looks like a bottle of Pepto Bismol.
Amy Adams in Carolina Herrera. While the color is beautiful the black piping and the front drape plus the christmas neckbrace is just too much.
Jessica Biel in Prada. Not sure what the concept was behind this one, but i would have preferred if she had washed her hair for the event.
Taraji P. Henson in Cavalli. One of my favorite looks of the night. - the gown, the gorgeous vintage statement necklace down to the red clutch. It just worked...
Vanessa Hudgens in Marchesa - lots of things going on on this gown(which was short and Vanessa asked for it to be long for the event - I'm not sure the mermaid look was also a special request) but good thing the birds that landed on the bodice distract from whats happening from the waist down(nice arm candy though!)
Beyonce in House of Dereon. Another mermaid gown gone wrong. The things we do for our families....
Freida Pinto in John Galliano. Hollywood's newest It girl could wear a hefty bag and look great. I still don't get the one shoulder(one sleeve) look but its a beautiful color and different than most gowns on the red carpet last night.
Tina Fey in Zac Posen. She gets more glamorous at each red carpet event she attends This was the best mermaid style at this year's awards(and her presenting with Steve Martin was a major highlight for me)
Penelope Cruz in Vintage Balmain Couture. My favorite of the evening(i'm a sucker for vintage anyway) this is the gown that SJP has been looking for all her life!
Thats it for this awards season - see you in September....
But I will say this about last night's telecast of the SAG awards. Meryl Rules and in a sea of scary thin women Claire Danes was the scariest.
